This website was developed out of the BC Enhanced Recovery Collaborative and provides a variety of resources to support the implementation and improvement of Enhanced Recovery programs. While the BC Enhanced Recovery Collaborative closed in January 2016, the Specialist Services Committee (sponsor) continues to add new resources and content to this website and maintains a multi-disciplinary network of Enhanced Recovery advisors.

About Enhanced Recovery

There is a growing body of evidence and interest within the global surgical world to implement Enhanced Recovery protocols, as Enhanced Recovery has been found to optimize, enhance, and hasten recovery. Enhanced Recovery protocols are multi-modal perioperative care pathways designed to achieve early recovery after surgical procedures by maintaining pre-operative organ function and reducing the profound stress response following surgery.

Enhanced Recovery patients are:

  • Less likely to develop a post-operative complication
    • Less immediate demand on resources (e.g. critical care)
    • Less long-term demand on resources (e.g. improved long-term survival)
  • More likely to have a shorter length of stay
    • Improve access to care
    • Reduce wait times
  • Less likely to be readmitted
    • Less demand on resources
  • More likely to have a shorter overall convalescence
    • Less time to re-enter society
    • Less time before being ready for secondary treatments (e.g. chemotherapy/radiation therapy)

About the BC Enhanced Recovery Collaborative

From November 2014 to January 2016, eleven BC surgical sites worked together as the BC Enhanced Recovery Collaborative (‘the Collaborative’). The Collaborative aimed to improve outcomes for elective colorectal surgery patients by collectively implementing the evidence-based Enhanced Recovery protocol: a multi-modal perioperative care pathway designed to achieve early recovery after surgical procedures by maintaining pre-operative organ function and reducing the profound stress response following surgery. Sponsored by the Specialist Services Committee (SSC), the BC Enhanced Recovery Collaborative applied the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Breakthrough Series model to integrate evidence into practice by promoting cross-site learning and teaching, efficient sharing of resources and tools, and development of a multi-disciplinary network of Enhanced Recovery clinicians and champions.

For more information on the BC Enhanced Recovery Collaborative, please refer to the detailed Final Report and Final Report – Highlights, which describe the background, structure, activities, results, and lessons learned from the Collaborative experience.
